Calm’s brilliant album, Before, has just got a “tranquil” transparent blue vinyl repress, care of Hell Yeah! To help celebrate I grilled the label’s head honcho, Marco Gallerani, and, of course, Calm, for 10 top tunes from their legendary Kagoshima sunset session residency, Afterglow.
MARCO GALLERANI
Andrea Bocelli / Con te Partirò

Totally unexpected, and totally emotional, Calm played this one at sunset and I burst into tears.
Sandro Perri / In Another Life

That day Calm also played this one…
Jonas Munk & Nicklas Sorensen / Patterns

…and this one…
Kenkou / Everlasting Dreams (Calm’s Still Dreaming Mix)

This came about as a result of that Afterglow session.
Jim O’Rourke / Something Big

Driving around Tokyo, Calm was pumping Jim O’Rourke’s Eureka on the car stereo. I don’t need to add that I’ve been addicted to this record since then.
CALM
Gavin Bryars / Jesus’ Blood Never Failed Me Yet

A very long song for a DJ Party. You need real patience to wait for the climax. But Afterglow is all about all kinds of beautiful music.
RC Succession / Imagine

Good Japanese lyrics on this great cover version. A perfect tune for Japanese Sunset Time.
The Youngbloods / Sunlight (Live in New York, 1969)

A perfect tune for Worldwide Sunset Time. I was born in 1969.
Vangelis / One More Kiss, Dear

A good closing tune.
Asgeir / Afterglow

This is the main theme of the party.
The “tranquil” transparent blue vinyl edition of Calm’s Before is out now, care of Hell Yeah!

Wonderful read as always and the first time I heard Con te partiro I had the same emotional rush and washed out whatever we part with through our tears! I love the odd time a record can do that, the power and energy of music is incredible
