Ruf Dug / Casita Más Alta / International Feel

With a title that translates as “the tallest house”, Casita Más Alta is a musical tribute to Ibiza. A short tour of The White Isle, where Ruf Dug is your guide. Alighting on a few of his favourite Balearic hideaways, our first stop is Cala Vedella, a “Blue Flag” beach, so super environmentally friendly, and an uber cool cove for scuba diving, way, way over west. Sonically speaking, it’s represented by sexy, sighing soft-focus synths, and a gently lapping conga and bongo tide. A sleepy siesta, saluting the sun – either hello, or goodbye – that takes its cues from Art Of Noise classics, Moments In Love and Camilla, The Old, Old Story.

The titular “tall house” plays host to a party, its soundtrack a tonking tribal dance. Programmed panpipes, Detroit techno strings, and great, gurgling bass-line, together rattle out a rocking rhumba. There’s a breakdown, where the keys get all jazzy, but after things turn a bit, well I want to say Hardfloor. There’s this mad, Aceperince-esque, eruption. Acid-like, but I don’t think it’s a 303. Instead the rush comes from these sort of shredded muezzin-like / Moog-y emissions, that bear the buzz of a vintage bit of kit. Smacking of Ruffy trying out a new toy.

Despite being soaked in sampled wildlife, Las Cicadas ain`t referring to the crickets, but rather a posh boutique villa of the same name. A 500-year-old restored farmhouse, at the centre of the island, near Santa Gertrudis de Fruitera. A retreat for artists who have sufficient cash. This time the music begins as a moody house rumble before a pretty marimba melody pacifies the ethno-electronica, taking it somewhere totally different. It’s this track, for my money, that’s the standout. The one with real longevity.

Finally we land in Platja des Niu Blau, and find Mr. Dug doing his very best Wally Badarou. Circuitry simulating steel pans, in a tropical Synclavier symphony that’s part zouk, soca, calypso, and part Wally’s wonderfully weird Dachstein Angels. Serenading a spot made famous by Spanish post-impressionist painter, Rigoberto Soler – the coastline cops its name from his hand-made hut, “The Blue Nest” – and that was later home to a host of British actors – Denholm Elliott, Laurence Olivier, Leslie Phillips, Terry Thomas, and Diana Rigg. One can only imagine the swinging scenes.

Ruf Dug’s Casita Más Alta is out now on International Feel.
