Fresh from joining forces with modern jazz man, Greg Foat, Gigi Masin now turns his hand to some stellar soul. Venice’s “ambient” maestro has hooked up with Stones Throw for a magical remix of Eddie Chacon’s already sublime, Sundown. Where the original song is a cool conga’d groove – a gentle existential mantra – inspired by Pharoah Sanders, and with the big Balearic bonus of being written in Ibiza, Gigi’s opus opens with drones and just Eddie’s echoed, fragile, falsetto, vocal. Sounding like Chet Baker (Let’s Get) lost in space. A muted horn, tasteful trumpet, then makes way for tumbling beats and a booming bottom-end.
Gigi’s rework, to my ears at least, references classic `90s progressive house and IDM. A little bit The Orb, and a little bit Underworld. Rattling away, but still seriously chilled. His improvised circuitry singing, soloing, sending out serene 6-string-like microtones. Underlining Eddie’s message, “We all face the sun.” Waiting for our turn… to leave this veil, and enter the eternal ether. Here to go, but vibrate on.
Gigi Masin’s remix of Eddie Chacon’s Sundown is out now, digitally, on Stones Throw. I honestly think that this is a future classic. If it’s not part of a forthcoming vinyl project, can someone, please, please, at least physically comp it?
