Black Bones / Konstant Kollision / Mystic Arts

The A-side of this tasty Black Bones 12, on Belfast-based label, Mystic Arts, is a barmy bit of bass-heavy, breakbeat-driven neo-rave, with the  moniker Find The Frequency. Sampled disco divas scream and shout, synth riffs boisterously build-the-box, and the tune`s off its nut, like The Lost`s Balearic fave, The Gonzo, and Landlord`s I Like It juiced on steroids. A moment of 1990-esque madness, a flashback to a time before the UK house scene splintered and fragmented, I can almost hear the pirate radio MCs insisting that we don`t touch that dial, and “keep it locked.” Asking, that most important of questions, “Who`s coming up?” This is music meant for crazy convoys of cars on their way to a bash in a field, that`ll later be raided by a bothered and bewildered Old Bill.

Konstant Kollision, in contrast, is metallic, industrial-edged, downtempo dub. An amazingly accurate reconstruction of Adrian Sherwood`s On-U Sound, and especially early African Head Charge – complete with chants a la their seminal Songs Of Praise and Stebeni`s Theme. The tune`s roots are in reggae, `cos it definitely wants to skank, but its beats are a block-rocking collage. The bass emitting the odd bionic bowel-moving belch. I`m willing to bet that this would have found favour with a young Andrew Weatherall, back when the DJ / icon was ecstatically, eclectically riding the crossfader, rather than segueing seamless blends.

If this is your thing, then I should add that something else cut from similar sonic cloth is Jezebell`s Pots & Pans Mix of Andres y Xavi`s Bibbles. The sleazy electro pair have actually submitted three remixes, but this one is my pick. It rattles and booms, recalling the subversive sampling of Jack Dangers` / Meat Beat Manifesto, and the aforementioned Weatherall`s rework of Jack`s track Psyche Out.
