Diehard analogue dance-floor duo, Buran, have a new E.P. out on Timothy Clerkin’s Ran$om Note offshoot, Insult To Injury. The Hunter E.P. features three tracks, plus a remix from architect and animator Chog Burley, aka Void Complet. The latter borrowing from Bawrut’s banging balls-out party-starting modern acid house.
Dedicated to Orion, the great hunter from Greek Mythology, each of the tunes takes its name from the trio of star systems that make up the constellation, Orion’s Belt. Alnilam – a big blue supergiant – is a kind of rough and ready cut, that packs the punch of a live improvisation. You never quite know what’s gonna happen next. Without a strict “song” structure, busy bleeps bounce about over a mutating mix of UK industrial dance and classic Chicago jack. Mintaka is actually made up of multiple celestial bodies, but at 1, 200 light-years from the Sun, in the night sky, to the naked eye, it appears as only one. Its musical counterpart, compared to its neighbours, rings with a more readily recognisable, more obvious riff. Its synths bending and distorting this hook throughout its gallivanting groove. The standout for me, personally, however, is the original mix of lead single, Alnitak. The brightest ultraviolet-emitting Class O orb in our heavens, is here sonically represented by EBM-edged, mad manic oscillations. Featuring a full-on TB-303 and percussive patterns that sound like a South American street carnival, filtered though `80s post-punk – think ACR on E, or Factory Floor’s fantastic Two Different Ways. The frantic energy / power generated is intoxicating, frankly, irresistible, and with no melody as such, totally reliant on rhythm. A flex of constantly changing, evolving drum-driven flux.
Buran’s The Hunter E.P. is available to preorder from Insult To Injury.
