A trio of tunes from last year’s terrific Tonight We Fly E.P., by Sewell & The Gong, have been remixed. Rising Star Jimmy Wallace reimagines Better Words as a gently pounding percussive tribal dance. Where the OG was all glacial guitar and melodica, here synths chime like blinking stars, and there’s the sound of a tropical storm deep in the mix. Justin Robertson re-rubs the cosmic Passing Oort Clouds, transforming the original’s “organic motorik” into bass-heavy dance-floor dub. Reframing the 6-string dexterity with bottom end boom and bleeps. The whole lot is shaken by shock waves rising from the rattle of echoed timbales.
There are two new takes on the former title track. Ruf Dug isolates the peaceful piano and picking, first creating a Roedelius / Cluster-esque piece, before setting this to a playful Carl Orff / Gassenhauer-like procession of wood block percussion. Jon “Ocean Moon” Tye treats us to a lush new age lullaby. Looping sequences and floating them through phase effects. A summery strum then surfaces, like sun breaking cloud. A change in the weather for the better. The end result is a piece of plugged-in folk full of positive vibes. Something subtly, skilfully, designed to send listening spirits soaring.
