Shrouded in mystery John Greek originally released I’m Hot For Your Body as a privately pressed 12” single in 1979. According to legend only 100 copies were made, but now DFA have done a legit, licensed reissue.
A gritty, grungy, production, it’s a seriously sedated bass guitar-led groove. Chugging, creeping, cosmic disco – like Les Rockets’ Future Woman (an old DJ Harvey favourite) on a fistful of high quality ’ludes. What it really reminds me of though is Bob Chance. A veteran rock’n’rolla trying their hand at something new. During the late 1950s John played in the Washington garage band, The Wailers, and in ’67, as The Beautiful Daze, recorded the sought after psyche smash, City Jungle.
Smothered in mad, spacey sound effects, lyrically, I’m Hot For Your Body is basically the title repeated obsessively, over and over. Certainly sleazy, John sounds a bit barmy and a little unhinged. I can see shakes and sweats, and I’m not sure that you’d want to be left in a room alone with him. There’s a crazy axe solo which, on their remix, is cut up and made even crazier by Velvet Season & The Hearts Of Gold. The famous digging duo subtly slice and dice the song so that there’s a bonus 3 minutes of climatic, head-banging freakout.
John Greek & The Limiters’ I’m Hot For Your Body is out now on DFA.
