Taus Bregnhøj-Olesen and Emil Palme are both classically trained guitarists. The pair met while studying in Copenhagen. However, together, as Yngel, they are at pains to move away from conventional playing. Taus builds his own instruments and pedals, and the two friends also experiment with techniques such as striking strings with rocks and stones. To date they’ve released 6 albums, and their 7th has been signed to Brighton-based independent, FatCat. The set, Silva, finds Yngel collaborating with fellow countrymen, and label-mates, Halvcirkel.
Now effectively a sextet, with cello, violin and 2 violas, the musicians showcase some sublime improvisation. Their bowing and pizzicato plucking intricately interwoven about delicate drones, raised with strokes of slate and flint. The organic voices sensitively shadowing the electric in symphonies of sustained tones, hovering harmonics and shimmering phase effects. Blurring the boundaries between classical, folk, and post-rock riffs on Americana. There are experimental moments, more about mood than a catchy melody, but collectively they create something still very accessible, and in places, like Nupli, very beautiful.
Yngel’s Silva is available to preorder directly from FatCat Records.
