I’m not sure about Harri Pierson’s boast that his latest release is The Most Balearic Record In The World, that’s obviously a bit of tongue-in-cheek trolling, but the track is certainly pretty special. Built on a post-Soul II Soul beat, souped-up with some serious digidub bass, it juxtaposes jaunty whistling with a menage a trois sung / spoken vocal. The protagonist’s suggestions of “You, me and her” are supplemented with swells of synthesised strings, and while his delivery is wonky, kind of offkey, it adds to the tune’s addictive charm. It’s one of those records, where the first time you hear it you’ll think “What the fuck is this?”, and then, later you’ll be forking out a fortune for a copy. Along the way it picks up choirboy backing that sounds more than a little like Neil Tennant, giving the track the vibe of a cheeky `90s Italian take on Pet Shop Boys’ We All Feel Better In The Dark. A flashback to the daze when prolonged and excessive Ecstasy use had slowed dancefloor tempos to 98 BPM and turned us all into horny libertines. The instrumental swaps the song for a full-on 9-minute sex dungeon porno performance that’ll either have you laughing, outraged, or caught genitalia in hand.
Harri Pierson’s The Most Balearic Record In The World can be ordered directly from Duca Bianco.
