New Leeds label, Moonunit Records, have launched with a split 12. On one side you’ll find local singer / songwriter / producer and sometime Nightmares On Wax collaborator, Comfy Bella, who supplies the song, Knights. An intoxicating dose of deep, Detroit-influenced soulful house, it’s a lush, laidback, late night groove, that had me thinking of Moodymann’s Mahogani Music and Theo Parrish with Billy Love. A very nice slice of sophisticated modern dancefloor R&B, that drops to an extended coda of slapped bass runs and chiming keys. So slick that I was also reminded of Cherrie Bea’s relatively recent Voice Notes E.P.
On the flip is London’s Sy Sez, whose Change The System, in complete contrast, is a powerful piece of bass heavy bleep. Where righteous Rastas, reggae MCs preach for love, peace, unity, and equality, in the dance. Musically clearly an homage to pioneering acts from Moonunit’s hometown, such as LFO and the aforementioned Nightmares On Wax, it calls for revolution – “Word, sound and power break down the barriers of oppression” – over bionic bumping and robotic rattling – hectic high hats and a mad synth solo – in a fashion forged by Sheffield’s Warp and FON Studios.
You can order directly from Moonunit Records.
