Galliano / Cabin Fever

Galliano’s first new slice of vinyl for 27 years has been snuck out ahead of their soon some album Halfway Somewhere. Cabin Fever is a limited hand-stamped white-label 45. Serenaded by melodica and dropped into dubwise, it pays tribute to at least 3 or 4 artists. To begin with the song borrows its title, opening sample – “when the music plays we holler…” – reggae soundclash sound effects, and massive B-line from Andrew Weatherall’s 1992 remix of the Galliano track Skunk Funk. Secondly Rob Gallagher’s delivery is a definite nod to The Clash’s Joe Strummer and the post-punk smash, Radio Clash. Then Valerie Etienne soars with a spirit-lifting, gospel-edged bite from Junior Byles. Her chorus of “The rich are getting richer everyday, and the little the poor man has will be taken away”, having been cribbed from Byles’ 1976 Jo Jo Hookim produced Channel One cut, Fade Away. A song that On-U Sound’s flagship cultural musical melting pot, New Age Steppers covered for their 1981 debut, where it was voiced by The SlitsAri Up. None of this, of course, is coincidence.

I’m a big fan of Gallagher’s conspiratorial whispers and deep, densely layered argot. The decades have only served to sharpen his very London, modern beat wit. His poetry always seems to perfectly paint, gauge, capture the times in what on the surface is collaged contemporary night bus patois. In the light of unfolding UK events, his chant here of “Don’t wanna take my country back man, wanna take my country forward” couldn’t be more spot on.

On the flip you’ll find Dancin Your Own Time, a deft dose of great groovy jazz funk, that paraphrases Parliament and Funkadelic, and in places, perhaps, plays on Steve Wonder’s Higher Ground. Rob riffing on Gil Scott-Heron to diss Elon Musk.
