Dean Drouillard has a new self-released album out, called Mirrors And Ghosts, which sees the Canadian singer / songwriter improvise a totally instrumental set on synth, pump organ, percussion, guitar and bass, that gets increasingly abstract across 8 tracks. The opening numbers, therefore, are easily the most accessible. Chroma comes in on fragile feedback, distorted drones and warm low-end tones, with a riff reminiscent of Neil Young’s theme for Jim Jarmusch’s Dead Man. A doomed gunslinger ballad. An existential Bordertown blues.
Similar to some extent to Raymond Richards’ ambient work on ESP Institute, Portland features pace-per picking, plus pedal steel, and could be pigeon-holed as post-rock Americana if it weren’t for its piano motif. The keys lending the tune a lighter, but still emotional, European feel.
Dean Drouillard’s Mirrors And Ghosts can be found on Bandcamp.
