Francis Morning / Subtle Bodies / Lo Recordings

Lo Recordings have released the latest instalment in their SPACIOUSNESS series. A ongoing collection of “meditation music” cassettes, the project so far has included a couple of incredible comps and serene solo outings from artists such as Coral Sea, IKSRE, and Lecu. The new one, titled Subtle Bodies, comes care of composer Francis Morning.

The accompanying press one-sheet suggests a concept concerned with auras, energies that surround a person, and how these transient forces transform, dissipate and decay. There are 15 tracks in total and each seems to evolve from a separate and distinct musical source. Stay, for example, is fashioned from gentle jazzy Fender Rhodes flourishes, while its neighbour, Projection, is synthesised from strings. Acoustic piano provides the foundation for Complete. On Dissolve, organ drones. Precious chimes, Essence is constructed from metallic, kalimba-like clicks, Vessel floats, hovers, on vaporised voices. Channels is fractured and glitched. Broken but beautiful.

These individual instruments are used to create complimentary muted, melodic textural works, part new age, part pastoral kosmische, where shimmering sustained notes and harmonic, ohm-like, hum build not a wall but a veil of sound. A sonic stillness. Peace and calm. Soaking the listener in a warm bath of well being and blurring, wandering the boundary between waking and dreaming.

Francis Morning’s Subtle Bodies is out now on Lo Recordings.
