Reading Elements Art’s short Bandcamp bio it seems that the label are at pains to keep their producers’ identities a mystery. Perhaps giving people the opportunity to try / do something new / different. So while retaining their anonymity Inner Child Gurus have released their debut LP, Reframe. The promo sampler contains 4 tracks that play with the same sound palette but are still pretty varied. The Last Sunset, for example, is a really nice hit of happy, trippy hippy house, with percussion like echoed rattlesnake tails, spirit-lifting swells, small acid spikes and chanted prayer / mantra vocals. Wonky, and wobbly, it had me thinking of Teacher’s Balearic classic, Can’t Step Twice. The sleek, smooth, Iwanttogoback, on the other hand swims – not skims – submerged at the deeper end of prog / tech house.
Know Thyself is different again, a dope dose of slo-mo dubby IDM – kinda like if one of the previous cuts were played at 33 not 45rpm. Machined, mellow, melodic and perhaps a tribute to 90s chillout room gear, it floats more than comfortably alongside the recent loved-up, blissed-out sides on Wax O`Paradiso. The Eden Mix of The Things They Say then speeds up an old school Spoonie Gee / Pumpkin break beneath chiming, racing piano. The barks from A Homeboy, A Hippie & A Funki Dred’s Total Confusion also get sampled, while muted modal chords bring a little jazz – in the same way that Psychotropic’s Only For The Headstrong is jazzy.
Inner Child Gurus’ Reframe long-player and The Things They Say single can be ordered directly from Elements Art.
