Looking For Love is a highly sought after album of superior soul / jazz straight outta 1980s Tel Aviv. Recorded by singer / songwriter Margeeah Aharon, backed by the Kingdom Sounds Community Band, the 8 songs are split between ballads and dance floor friendly numbers. The title track belongs to the former, and is a fine demonstration of the music’s sometimes folky leanings. Acoustic guitar and piano accompanying Margeeah’s peaceful pitch perfect vocals. Mixed with the great group harmonies these making the collective sound a bit like a hippy, Hebrew Rotary Connection.
Bring The People Home packs a funky flute and party / carnival percussion, and lyrically isn’t so much about repatriation as inclusivity, unity in the eyes of god. I Ask The Question sorta skanks. Bouncing along at a slower tempo. Music Is My Love, on the other hand, hits like an urgent vamp on Patti Labelle’s David Mancuso / Loft favourite, Music Is My Way Of Life, where the bass gets slapped while axe and sax solo.
All the standout pieces soar and swing, and the religious aspects boil down to pushing positive values, kindness and caring. Rise Black Spirit is the long-player at its most up-lifting. A super sing-along club group hug.
Margeeah’s Looking For Love can be ordered directly from Frederikberg Records.
