Certain to set sections of the modern “Balearic Beat” scene alight, Crossfire is a mysterious, deliberately anonymous single-sided 7 that’s home to a sweet, shuffling sing along. I can imagine it being big at Rotation’s annual summer garden party, for example. An undercover update of a fairly famous singer / songwriter, it sets their soft rock vocal and funky rhythmic strum to chunky, chugging, dubby, mid-tempo looped backing. Suitable for both / either sunset cocktail-sipping contemplating or a little gentle dancefloor frugging, its lyrics are a big selling point. Existential, but full of wonder, rather than dread, its protagonist telling us “I took my troubles down to the sea, put my ear to a seashell inquisitively”, in an ode in awe of nature. Promising a peace, “There will be stillness.” Something we all long for and that, right now, will require a whole lot more than just hope. A potential anthem, perhaps it can inspire first unity, and then action. Anything that brings us together can only be a plus.
