Mancunian musician Andrew Hargreaves has constructed 2 long-form compositions for Brighton-based imprint Phantom Limb. In keeping with his alias of the Tape Loop Orchestra these pieces explore “repetition and gradual dissolution.” The press one-sheet talks about “floods of remembrance” and tapping into “unsettling nostalgia.”
On Voix Figees (Frozen Voices) soft low drones manufacture a melody like something familiar that’s illuminated only in half-light. Their source, possibly orchestral, string / bow-derived, generating a stately melancholy. Higher, tender toned timbres gradually cut through this sad symphony, which is then stretched into fragile treated textures. Continually threatening to disintegrate, it finally makes good on that promise and falls apart. Leaving only its shadow, its spectre. However, the sorrow doesn’t last long. It’s quickly replaced by harp-like plucked chimes and hushed harmonies. Switching the mood to something more peaceful, more serene.
Public announcements, in Japanese close Side 1 and open Side 2, Voix Empruntees (Borrowed Voices), a soothing stream which seems to have been woven from what was once electric guitar and angelic, operatic arias – and drops to just reed-like resonance as it fades.
A post-rock / post-classical deconstruction of music and melody, Hargreaves here experiments in dispensing with structure and form, without losing emotion. In the process, perhaps, his delicate dismantling actually reveals, releases, intensifies feelings, that were previously hidden – such as the deep sadness, but also a grace, a beauty. The results soundtracking states such as mourning, longing and grief that are central / intrinsic to what it means to be human. Sensations we shy from, but that we must face. Experiences that are painful, but unavoidable, parts of our journey.
Tape Loop Orchestra’s Voix de Sabbat can be ordered directly from Phantom Limb.
