Sex Judas feat. Ricky are a Norwegian 6-piece, fronted by Tore Gjedrem of Ost & Kjex. They’ve just remixed a few tracks. Enlisting assistance from a several fellow countrymen and women, plus a dub specialist and an ambient architect.
Olav Brekke Mathisen & Sideshow Jøgge, part of the musical family centred around Snorkel Records, released the seminal Scandinavian “Nu Disco” album N.A.O.M.B. around 20 years ago. Their take on It’s In Your Eyes chops up the original’s lyrics to a banging, bouncing beat. Plugged-in drums pop, sirens sound, strings spiral dramatically and a synth riff pays homage to old school Chicago house.
Helene Rickhard is a member of the Cosmic Oslo Crew, which also includes Balearic veteran, Rune Lindbæk. Her shake of Your Hair In My Soup starts out as swinging, subversive pop, centred around the group’s harmonies, but then stops and shifts gears into something far stranger. Something Gjedrem describes as “sort of mutant shoegaze”. Gurgling and fizzing as its notes and timbres are twisted inside out. The chorus now exiled to way off on the horizon. In orbit, even.
KMRU also has a bash at the same track. Since self-releasing his first single (later picked up by Byrd Out) in 2019, the Kenyan born, Berlin based sound designer has collaborated with techno / electronica luminaries like Luke Slater and Speedy J – plus reimagined Seefeel – and prolifically, produced multiple solo works, for avant / experimental labels such as Touch, Phantom Limb and Editions Mego. Shaping a sonic serenity of rippling resonance and vibrating drones, he surrounds Sex Judas in fragile, glitched tones like those from a faulty, broken, over-loved music box.
Finally Adrian Sherwood tackles Talking Dogs. A slow, but seriously funky Afro groove, with honking sax and spoken / chanted vocals, the dub guru adds a touch of On-U Sound gris-gris and voodoo. Mixing vintage, Moog-y effects with cool, echoed percussion. Dancing details made to fidget between flickering and forceful fanfares.
