Mark Barrott has commissioned a handful of beautiful remixes to accompany his heartbreaking opus Everything Changes, Nothing Ends. The EP opens with Swedish pianist and composer Peter Sandberg subtly re-sculpting The Light Is Still There, making it more cinematic. Adding electric piano to its soft shimmer of drones. Summoning strings that seem to circle and spin like migrating birds taking flight in formation.
L.A.-based harpist Nailah Hunter and Tokyo’s prolific Chihei Hatakeyama both turn in tender takes on the sparse, sensitive Through The Mirror Of The Soul. The former swapping Barrott’s piano for her harp. The latter, reducing the already diaphanous, delicate instrumentation to only a sonic suggestion of rising tides and winds, while somehow amplifying the original’s powerful emotions.
Barrott’s Glaswegian label mate, Tagavaka, then tackles Just Like Falling Asleep. His Beatless electronic treatment transforming the incredibly moving, melancholy piano and cello-led piece into a sublime synergy of synths, strings and keys. Something, that despite its dark subject matter, now conjures a mood of not just letting go, but new beginnings. Building to a brief rush, before falling to stillness. Tagavaka also supplies a surprise 4 / 4-ed shake. A modern classical moment that cuts a rug, where his circuitry sparkles like spiritual jazz. A future classic in the making, it’s sure to soundtrack its fair share of summer festival rave epiphanies.
These wonderful remixes of Mark Barrott’s Everything Changes, Nothing Ends can be ordered directly from Bandcamp.
