For his last release David Harrow assumed his James Hardway alias to indulge in a little drum & bass. Now he returns to his birth name for an EP of chilled electronics. The music is a tad abstract in places, such as the space-y, slow Tetrahedron, and in amongst the oboe-like oscillations of Octahedron. However, the 5 cuts collectively amount to a soothing oasis.
Dodecahedron finds David’s machines meeting and greeting each other in evolving, overlapping repeats of fluttering frequencies and softly strobing sequences. Rippling, trickling, free-flowing counterpoint caresses, in a kind of robotic, computerised Steve Reich-ian classical minimalism.
Hexahedron’s gentle tumbling tones sound a bit like echoed plucked banjo strings, set to percussive hang drum patterns. Busy, but calming collisions, that reflect the magic and method of Reich’s Music For 18 Musicians, especially in its buzzing, resonating string like phase shifts.
Bubbling, bleeping, gurgling and percolating, Icosahedron wraps its twisting chimes and drones around a bongo / conga loop, while its keys chop out a slight skank.
David Harrow’s Platonic Solid can be ordered directly from Bandcamp.
