Psychederek’s latest single, Thinkin’ Bout U, comes in 4 different mixes, named after planets. Four different moods. Spinning in 4 different orbits. The first, with the moniker Mercury, is almost ambient. A gentle bass modulation, mellow, and Mediterranean, its details of loon birds and sax, a reminder of his cracking cover of 808 State’s Pacific State from last year.
The second, titled Venus, opening with sighs and echoed exclamations, is carried by quick, tropical congas. The sax is intact, but the lead instrument is now some brilliant Will Sergeant / Bunnymen-like guitar. The fretwork building to a final twangy, tremolo freakout.
Mars is marked by a hefty club kick. Its weight countered by pace-y percussion fills. In keeping with the Mancunian musician’s previous electro glam grooves, such as 2021’s Sean Johnston remixed / approved Screamadereka, this one is also likely to make shindigs like A Love From Outer Space move. Circuitry gurgles around the reed and a sharply strummed riff. The former getting to solo, post breakdown, in the track’s second half. The results, a mix of rock and machines, like a modern cosmic reading of Paris Angels’ classic Perfume.
The closing Jupiter Reprise is a more “Balearic” surprise, where, while the sax is still centre stage, the keys squeeze, and soar, in and out of hurried hand drums and soft melodic drones, mimicking Astor Piazzolla’s tango bandoneon.
Thinkin’ Bout U can be ordered directly from Psychederek’s new “micro” label Via Jupiter.
