The Circling Sun / Orbits / Soundway Records

At the start of the summer Aotearoan 8-piece, The Circling Sun, released their second album, Orbits, on Soundway. Bolstering their ranks with a further 5 guests, plus 5 extra choir members they’ve recorded 7 new numbers. They all amount to group hymns to spiritual healing, something achieved through unity – connecting with each other, reconnecting with nature, her cycles, and playing our teeny tiny part in the cosmos.

Constellation kicks off with swinging horn hooks, and harmonies that hark after Pharoah Sanders. The saxophonist’s classic, You Gotta Have Freedom is a touchstone for the whole LP. Syncopation crashes cathartically, the cymbals celebratory explosions, little “big bangs”, a lively Latin lick to the rhythm, and a sonorous saxophone solos. Every instrument moves independently, individually, yet tightly in tune with its neighbour. Together offering up a truly joyful noise to the creator. Whoever, whatever, that may be.

Mizu, which Japanese label Wonderful Noise singled out for a boutique 7, is Brazilian-flavoured. With a cuica squeak, this is glorious. Its drums are dynamic, its keys classy, the choir soaring. It’s like Sergio Mendes does John Coltrane. Flying also jets down to Rio. Running a rumbling samba bass-line beneath electric piano virtuosity. Seki is a modal moment, that, again, spotlights the pianist. On Teeth, trumpet and organ take the lead.

The whole album is outstanding. Travelling through tempo changes and showcasing different soloists, it still amounts to a seamless set. A sublime uninterrupted listen from start to finish. Satisfying, nourishing, from its opening patter of percussion to its final fade, it’ll leave your spirits singing, lifted.

The Circling Sun’s Orbits can be ordered directly from Soundway.
