NuNorthern Soul have asked a few friends to remix tracks from Tambores En Benirras’ 2023 LP, Ondas Horizontales. The first part of a trilogy, which will include 12 reworks in total, the EP opens with Ruf Dug re-imagining Mi Sueno Vive En Reverb. The mercurial Mancunian wonderfully weaving layers of birdsong, fragile fretwork, sparkling synths and hushed, human sighs over a gently lapping conga tide. This computerised counterpoint occasionally erupting with sonic colour, like time-lapse shots of summer in bloom.
Simon Sheldon’s shake of Un Placer Celestial is similarly chilled. Perhaps even more so. Putting its emphasis on echoed, ethereal exclamations, a little zither-like zing and spiralling desk effects. Its beats, slow but big, dubbed, delayed. Shivering, shuddering, summoning, in the same way The Cure’s Lullaby did, a sense of a, post-rush, MDMA hit.
Steve Cobby modifies Extensor Entregado, turning the tune into a marvellous mix of the acoustic and electronic. Its B-line, bubbling, burbling, almost acidic, sorta like sedated bleep, beneath jazzy keys. Grounding things with the shuffling syncopation of his own, fine, funky trap drumming. It’s the juxtaposition of genres that makes this track great. Over 9 minutes the arrangement expands to include subtle orchestral touches and kinda chanted vocals. Building, climbing to cathartic, controlled explosions. Little points of release. Carefully crafted, understated sunset stuff, that’ll certainly be appreciated by aficionados, it’s super in line with the music found on Jose Padilla’s React Cafe del Mar comps, and back-in-the-day would have quickly been considered a classic.
Finally, Andres Y Xavi add driving bass and a jaunty, percussive gallop to Templos Del Sol’s sensitive 6-string picking. Taking the tempo up, and the music out onto a preferably Mediterranean dance floor.
