Coreysan / Heavy Load / Nine Channel

In 2018, Coreysan and Grant Dell collaborated on a track called Hijacked. Released on Dell’s label, Legsman, the tune picked up a ton of praise from celebrated selectors, including Andrew Weatherall, who played it on his Music’s Not For Everyone NTS radio show.

The pair are now back with a track on Dell’s new imprint, named Nine Channel. A proper piece of modern, electronic, forward-thinking roots the song pushes positivity in the face of adversity. Smartly skanking “through the hills and the valleys, the highways and the alleys…” carrying “heavy loads” down “many roads.”Advising “keep it cool, keep it steady, be calm, be ready…” A dub beefs up the already room-shaking bass, and swaps the bulk of the vocal for melodica, but the real bonus on the 12 is a remix from Weatherall’s former studio partner, Nina Walsh.

After years of personal bereavement and ongoing unpleasant legal wrangling, Walsh apparently connected, in particular, with Coreysan’s lyric, “the burdens that I carry can only make one stronger now.” In her hands the beats are tougher, more a slow breeze-block breaking funk than a rocksteady-derived riddim, and the bass a warning, pit bull-like growl. The melodica swimming in spinning, subliminal spectral details – scraped guitar strings, twittering circuity, lightning bolts of electricity and crashing snare fills. Walsh adding her own backing vocals, in chorus with Coreysan’s call for inner strength, resilience and resistance.

Coreysan’s Heavy Load gets a full release, care of Grant Dell’s Nine Channel, sometime in November, but advance copies are currently available exclusively at Sounds Of The Universe.
