Sewell & The Gong / Remixes Part 2 / DSPPR

Here DSPPR deliver a second package of tracks cherry-picked and remixed from Sewell & The Gong’s debut LP Patron Saint Of Elsewhere. Brian “Not Brian” Morrison and Piers Harrison, under their Sounds Of Slackness pseudonym, take the previously stomping and clapping Communion Phase and turn in a laidback, very possibly  live, dub. Setting up a soulful shuffle, constructed around a dusty funk break, their version uses only echoed fragments of the original’s energetic plucking and strumming. A bit of journey, the track travels, rattling and rolling, expertly, through various breakdowns and strange gurgling gating. The duo spinning Sewell’s open-tuned buzzing backwards, to create ever so slightly trippy sitar-like shapes that are sure to move micro-dosed minds and feet.

Drumtalk then tackles Spectrum Two. Where the OG was a bouncing, buoyant, full-on plugged-in folk meet house meets space rock freak out, it’s now broken down into its constituent parts, with DT initially, sequentially, isolating the cycling violins, the banjo-like picking, the string and organ drones. His extended mix spaces and smooths these things out – rather than have them all playing at once – and the track now has time to build. Again bits are run in reverse, further adding to a sense of anticipation, and step-by-step, slowly, gradually, very cleverly he texturally transforms the tune from something organic to something electronic and much, much more techno. The original and the remix are both incredibly euphoric.
