Mark Barrott & Richard Norris / Nocturnes Vol. 1 / Anjunachill

Mark Barrott and Richard Norris, two masters of modern ambient / chillout – music of love and loss, music for healing – join forces. The result is Nocturnes Vol. 1, a sweet suite of six short, simple unhurried pieces. Compositions consisting of melodic keys and sighing, synthetic symphonies. Thoughtful minor chord, cinematic themes, and orchestral drones like faded fanfares. Sheer sonic sheets with glitched and delicately distorted edges. Each conveying emotion, despite their individual brevity. Adding up to more than the sum of their parts.

The Blue Hour bears an icy, crystalline Robin Guthrie with Harold Budd-esque beauty. The final Ambient Mix of Hazing opens and closes with computerised angelic vocals, and could be The Sabres Of Paradise’s Smokebelch reimagined as a children’s lullaby. The arrangements are minimal, sparse, but the production so rich that if you close your eyes you can picture a full philharmonic.

Nocturnes Vol.1 can be ordered directly from Richard, Mark and Anjunachill.
