Homies 10th Anniversary Compilation, Volume 1

Homies have been hosting events at Ibiza’s Pikes Hotel for 10 years. As part of the celebrations, the collective, founded by Luca Averna, Christian Len and Camilo Miranda, are releasing 3 compilations. The albums containing exclusives from their talented friends and musical guests. The first is out now, and opens with Andrea Dama’s swirling, spinning techno tones. An intricate IDM of deftly deconstructed breakbeats, which segues into Arnau ObiolsKabira Bay, whose 4 / 4 is surrounded by 80s influences – marimba-like patterns, Fairlight vocals, steel pan sequences and enthusiastic acoustic strumming.

Dennis Liber & Shoao’s Ekstasis mixes sexy Mediterranean whispers with booming old school Chicago bass and big, bright, jazzy keys. Luca Averna’s Shaku Chant sets its spoken vocal to acidic bubbling which relaxes into a rave piano riff.

An Italo-disco / house hybrid with trippy, trance-y trimmings, Trujillo’s Funkatarium harbours more fidgeting TB-303 frequencies. Rheinzand’s Mi Mundo is a tribal rite to “La Luna” which ironically samples shouts from Rockers Revenge’s Walking On Sunshine. Its gentle thumping subjected to snaking, belly dancing synths, Wurlitzer runs and psychedelic washes of what once might have been wah-wah guitar. Harder and darker Das Komplex’s Prad Wsteczny is, again, acid flecked.

Romain FX’s You’re The Only One is poppier, with a groovy B-line and a polish reminiscent of a classic Mark Moore / William Orbit production. SirsRiso Soffiato also boasts a great bass-line, but it’s a kinda camp hi-energy that drives the cut.

Finally, Leo Mas, Rago & Farina’s Fell To Be Free pays homage to 90s Euro-techno, with pounding drum programming, serrated screams and snares that ride Kraftwerk’s Trans Europe Express. Racing, progg-y, featuring full-on see-sawing siren “melodies” and a menacing low-end pulse, it had me flashing back to the main room at Space. Bent out of shape beneath the caged go-go dancers.

The whole album has a heavy, hedonistic, druggy quality, and the thing that really separates it from most other White Isle orientated collections is that it’s aimed directly at the dance floor. It doesn’t for a minute pussyfoot around ordering a sunset cocktail or nostalgically, introspectively naval gazing.

Homies’ 10th anniversary compilation, Volume 1, can be ordered directly from Bandcamp.
