Coyote / Nyabinghi / Pinchy & Friends

Coyote are the latest creators to be commissioned by LA label, Pinchy & Friends. The Is It Balearic? boys have risen to the challenge and delivered a seamless 40-minute suite. Titled Nyabinghi the piece dovetails the duo’s biggest musical passions, reggae, dub and Ibiza’s hedonistic heritage. The results are a blissed out blend of Benirrás Beach drum circle and Wareika Hills grounation ceremony. A sunset, sunrise ritual woven from percussion, gentle chimes, groovy bass-lines and soothing synthetic sighs.

Throughout righteous Rastas offer words of worship and wisdom. Teaching of “the spiritual, and the ancestral.” Offering praises to Haile Sellassie, accompanied by early Aphex Twin-like “ambient” melodies, a slow, shuffling beat, spinning tape effects and snatches of smokey sax.

As the rite continues, things get chunkier, chugging and then snapped to a more rigid rhythm. Congas and bongos run backwards, and the kick becomes cavernous. Taking listeners deeper, darker into its meditation / medication. Resurfacing for a smoke on a segment named Ganja Plantation, before signing off with a closing dance of haunting horns and a muted house 4 / 4.

Coyote’s Nyabinghi can be ordered directly from Pinchy & Friends.
