Following 2 releases on LA-based Leaving Records, local duo Green-House’s latest long-player comes care of Brooklyn’s Ghostly International. Hinterlands sees the pair further evolve their electro-acoustic “Eco-Ambient” sound.
Pieces like the softly syncopated Sun Dogs lean into the acoustic. Its laidback, languid, lounge-y exotica laced with Oriental timbres and tones. Well Of The World is built around treated kalmiba, vibes, xylophones. Dragline Silk is a duet, a dance, for flute and guitar whose, swing summons images of France’s Nouvelle Vague.
The album’s electronics encompass Sanibel’s programmed Brownian motion percolating, Misty Step’s glacial, Inoyamaland-esque glass harp glissandos, and Farewell Little Island’s intricate, glitchy clockwork.
Some tracks such as Bronze Age, continue to reference pioneers like The BBC Radiophonic Workshop. Echoing the artists on Ghost Box. Others, including the 3-part title track, are much, much more organic. Mixing picking and strumming with playful woodwind whistling. Full of folky, rhythmic counterpoint that conjures the Penguin Cafe Orchestra’s affectionate Americana tributes. Under The Oak, in contrast, is a simple, peaceful synth pastoral.
Green-House’s Hinterlands can be ordered directly from Ghostly International.
