The Rootsman / Roots Return / Crying Outcast

Miles J. Paralysis’ music definitely demonstrates a deep love of reggae and dub. For a fine example, for starters, check the strong digi-dub steppers influence on Snicket Rhythm. Then have a listen to his recent stellar reworks of Dub Specialists and Persian. Bradford-based Miles now cements this connection by licensing 3 incredible, archival cuts from local hero, John Bolloten aka The Rootsman.

Dub Of The Spirits is a collaboration with Celtarabia, the duo of Quentin Budworth and Tim Rayborn, who specialise in the use of medieval instruments, and who, like The Rootsman, have also worked with Muslimgauze. The track, lifted from the 1998 album Union Of Souls, is built around slow heavy pounding and squelchy twists of bass. Teasing with strange tones, that could be either ancient woodwinds or strings. Sneaking in snatches of ceremonial percussion. Adding a harmonium hook. Delay having everything spinning.

Loka Samasta is taken from a late 90s liaison with Russ Bell-Brown of The Disciples. Collectively calling themselves Pachakuti, an album, Return To The East, finally appeared, digitally, last year. Gated, trippy and dropping the tempo down further, the tune’s booming voice resembles that of The Rootsman’s debut, Koyaanisqatsi, while its repeater drums rock a ritual vibe.

When The Eye Opens, in contrast, is rave meets Jah Shaka, riding a relentless, energy-packed, house-BPM-ed rhythm. Its dynamic details constantly shifting. Shaking off delayed debris, infinitely trickling, like a bionic rainstick. Originally recorded at the turn of the millennium, but unreleased until 2015, the track is made absolutely essential by a sublime, soaring, pleading Middle Eastern prayer-like vocal. Miles completes the package with a stripped back remix, marrying the racing, rattling, tribal patterns with a haunting, muted melody.

The Rootsman’s Roots Return can be ordered directly from Miles J. Paralysis’ Crying Outcast.
