L.A.-based trio SY3 join Amsterdam’s Music From Memory for a 5-track EP. The majority of the songs showcased shimmy in the same sleek, stripped back, bass heavy territory as the music made by Test Pressing’s Apiento – with Lexx (as Leisure Dub) and Andrew Hale (as Open Space) – and Spiritual World’s sisterly duo, T3AL.
i.e. slow, seductive machine soul.
Electric Puppy, for example, boasts a boom bap rhythm which combined with Kelly Guan’s sexy scatting, hits like a Sci-Fi shot at Erykah Badu’s debut. PLS, is similar, but rides a rattling, stepping dancehall bogle-derived beat. Grace’s drums tumble in a more dubbed-out, loved-up skank. Like The Mad Prof. mixing Sade. Everything is lush and laid-back, with Phil Cho adding live B-lines and atmospheric guitar arcs. Alex Ho bringing jazzy, smoky sax and simple but funky keys.
The title track, 梦游 Sleepwalker, however, is the outlier. A swirl of spacey effects, echoed reeds, introspective piano, gentle low end oscillations, Cantonese prose poetry and digital processing fizz, it’s much more of an ambient drift.
SY3’s 梦游Sleepwalker can be ordered directly from Music From Memory.
