It`s Golden Week. The Sun`s shining. Everyone`s on holiday. Shinkansen trains in and out of cities are packed as folks aim to make the most of their super long “weekend”. To mark the end of the festivities (and put off those thoughts of work a little longer), the Lone Star crew are at back at Bonobo in Harajuku this Saturday.
It`s a full turnout this time. With the studious Gordy in for the warm-up. And Ken safely returned from a whistle-stop European tour (with Midori Takada). There`s even a rumour that Guy may pop in. Expect eclectic selections both upstairs and down.
Heres a top current tune from each of us. Hope to see you there.
Ken Hidaka
The True Underground Sound Of Rome / Night Love / Vibraphone
Max Essa
Verdo / Big Fish (Lauer Remix) / Hell Yeah!
Gordy
Talamanca System / My Past Is Your Future / International Feel
Rob
Johnny Thunders / Cool Operator / Jungle
I thought I knew a fair bit about Johnny Thunders. You Can`t Put Your Arms Around A Memory (a song Bob Dylan has allegedly said he wished he`d written) being a long time “anthem” of sorts. But I stayed up late one night watching Danny Garcia`s documentary, Looking For Johnny: The Legend of Johnny Thunders, and I heard this. Sounding more like Sal Principato`s Post-Liquid Liquid project, Fist Of Facts, or Talking Heads. Dropped into Dubwise. Than The New York Dolls precursor to Punk. More Mudd Club than Mercer Arts Centre. Some on-line searching for a copy turned up the info that it had been included on a Ku compilation in 1986. A lost Balearic Beat?

*The only clip I can find is unfortunately the Black Cat Dub, which strips away the cowbell, sax and harmonica.

My midnight to 2PM set from last month is up on Mixcloud. It was great fun to play to a dance floor for the first time in 18 months. Big thank you to “Tokyo” Matt Best for keeping me company (and my glass always full) and to Tomoko “Mad Party” for dancing.
