On Selected Rhythms, Melbourne’s Research Records collect a core of Elite Beat`s Casual Rhythms. The Portland, Oregon-based crew`s music being previously only available as a series of cassettes released on band-member Jesse “Gulls” Johnson`s Boomarm Nation imprint. The collective forming part of a local “new dub” community that also includes Ezra “E3” Ereckson and Tracy Harrison of Khaliphonic / Zam Zam, and Josh “Alter Echo” Derry. If you’re looking for an antipodean reference, well Selected Rhythms is like Sheriff Lindo & The Hammer meet No Zu`s Heat Beat uptown.
Jah Wobble-like b-lines dominating the record`s bottom-end. Highlife guitar taking care of the treble. Accompanied by the occasional shout / chant. All caught in huge dubwise washes of delay. Eternal feedback. The Mad Professor Vs. The Ruts DC.
Cymbals crashing. Spring reverb unit thunder clapping. Soundclash soundeffects soaking post-punk grooves. Scientist`s EQ lasers trained on spaced interplanetary invaders. Dropping intricate shuffling afrobeat patterns into echo. Brass blasting like Haggis Horns` The Traveller moving to Steely & Clevie`s Night Crawler riddim. Tongued-flutes and Pablo`s melodica powerdancing to Steel & Skin`s dub-disco, digging African Head Charge`s hole in the ground. Charming snakes at Lee Perry`s Black Ark.
