Born in Brazil, party promoter / starter Pedro Bertho currently hosts hugely successful shindigs at Lyon’s renowned nightclub, Le Sucre. Also a dab hand at production Pedro has a hot new E.P. out on Italy’s Hell Yeah Recordings! The 12 features a trio of tribally-tinged originals, that all draw on the percussive traditions of Pedro’s homeland. These are coupled with a pair cracking remixes from My Friend Dario and Romain FX. Since the sun seems to be out, I asked Pedro to talk me through a few of his favourite tropical Brazilian masterpieces.
Top tunes selected by Pedro Bertho, as told to our favourite four-to-the-floor expert, The Insider.
Milton Nascimento / Tudo Que Você Podia Ser
Probably the most beautiful song ever made on Earth. It touches my soul every time I hear it.
Milton Nascimento / Ponta de Areia
As you can see I’m a huge fan of Milton Nascimento. As Elis Regina said once “If God sang, He would do it with Milton’s voice”. This is just a masterpiece.
Amelinha / Galope Razante
This song takes me straight to the deep and warm heart of Brazil.
Virginia Rodrigues / Depois Que O Ile Passar
Black music is the past, the present and the future.
Black Alien / Babylon By Gus
Babylon made in Brazil. One the best rappers / flows I’ve ever heard.
Luisa Maita / Lero-Lero
I love her voice. I love the instrumental. You can hear samba flirting with jazz.
Edu Lobo / Viola Fora De Moda
Once again another song that takes my whole body and drops me deep into Brazil.
Jayme Marques / Berimbau
I’m huge fan of versions / covers. Well, here it’s a masterpiece of the Infamous ”Berimbau” from Vinicius de Moraes and Baden Powell.
Jorge Ben / Porque é Proibido Pisar Na Grama
Jorge Ben’s music is timeless. This song is about being alive in this world. About being human.
Gal Costa / Nuvem Negra
Everyone needs a love song! The original is from the genius Djavan, but it’s immortalised by the Brazilian queen, Gal Costa.
Marina Machado, Milton Nascimento e Caetano Veloso / Senhor do Tempo
The lyrics make this almost a sacred song.
Caetano Veloso / You Don’t Know Me
If don’t know Caetano, if you don’t know this album…well… you should!
“The world is spinning round slowly. There’s nothing you can show me from behind the wall.”
Pedro’s Le Lien E.P. is out now on Hell Yeah!
