Erick Legrand / Voodoo Music

Erick Legrand’s Voodoo Music, his latest posthumous collection, put together by former partner, Woodleigh Research Facility’s Nina Walsh, has ruff, rude electronics rub up against a kind of baroque, psyche, rock `n` roll. Where seismic subs and flickering electro frequencies mix with twisted tremolo twang and nasty, gnarly, fuzzbox guitar. Raising soundtracks for shadowy switchblade rumbles. R-rated West Side story scores.

The set’s similar in places to David Holmes’ work with Unloved, while DOING IT is David Lynchian, Wild At Heart. A wicked game with a machined Burundi beat. Dark dancefloor stuff then, where antique analog buzzes and hums, and the funk is lop-sided, and grimy, in line with ESG-influenced acts, such as Agent Provocateur and Gramme. Running with Richard Sen’s Bronx Dogs, and echoing his Giallo-homaging Padded Cell gear. Recreating the vibe of the original Heavenly Social – high in a basement, old school b-boy breaks banging against obscure acid rock.

There are flashes of freaky fairground Wurlitzer, harpsichord, and ethereal vocal harmonies. Skeletal jazzy syncopation drives moody Mo Wax-esque numbers. The Red Snapper ringer, ACE21, for example, comes bells tolling. Rhythm rolling. There’s also a rockabilly meets dub reggae aesthetic which twins the odd tune, like PARTY, with Leslie Winer’`s wonderful, (oc)cult classic, Witch. AMOR’s strung-out strum and Sci-Fi Moog solo summons the theme to some gritty after-the-watershed `70s TV show. The Sweeney’s Jack Regan on this second bottle of scotch. The Persuaders on a bender, plastered. Randall & Hopkirk deceased, and decomposing. Much of Erick’s music here will most definitely make your Halloween mixtape hip.

RESISTANCE stands out as a mellower moment. Melodica-led it suggests a mashed, wasted, morning after. The mangled machinery singing in sympathy with your nodding sore head. Recalling Two Lone Swordsmen’s more introspective excursions, and  also Eyes Of Others’ recent releases. In contrast, the closer, BAD GIRL, is a pumping piece of modern “post-house” minimalism. Stripped back, shuffling and shuddering, its sampled porn star princess protagonist locked in with spaghetti western riffing, ruptured free jazz reeds, and a broken drum & bass-inspired loop.
