Sean Johnston’s A Love From Outer Space continues to go from strength to strength. With the party travelling both the UK, and the globe. Due, not only to the music, but also its strong sense of community, it’s my London-based friends’ favourite shindig. By far. Hands down. Somehow, when not DJing, or out on the road, Sean managed to find plenty of time in 2023 to hit the studio, either solo, as Hardway Bros., or with Duncan Gray, aka Monkton. This resulted in a run of rather excellent remixes that began in May, with Islandman’s Godless Ceremony, and signed off with Electric Blue Vision’s Other Skies, in late November. Along the way there was a “Cosmic Interpolation” of PBR StreetGang’s Front Left Stack, and a “Cosmic Intervention” made on Holy Youth Movement’s Jagz Kooner-produced, Better Together, plus a dynamite PiL-referencing “Uptown” dub of Jack Butters’ Shake It Up. Piece de resistance, perhaps were Sean’s versions of Watson & Cole’s Just A Daydream Away. I’m a huge fan, in particular, of the “Live At The SSL” chug. These are only ones that we covered. I’m sure there were plenty more.

Brought to my attention by the legend that is Leo Zero, this Yello-esque banger was the undoubted dance-floor hit of the year. Massive breakdown – tick, speed up / slow down – tick, Boris Blanc style deadpan nonsense lyrics- tick! Wonderful!

Radio Slave / Strobe Queen

Matt Edwards delivered 12 minutes of ultra-classic piano house of the finest order. This sounded sweet on the Phonox system and was adored by the ALFOS Crew.

Pyrame / So Sprach Psychedelia (Rambal Cochet´s Trance Mix) 

If ever a record was perfect for my style then this is it – an insistent, low tempo, psychedelic pumper. It found favour with Vladimir Ivkovic and Ivan too!

Caramel 3000 / Super Rapido (Sirs Cut)

Trancey – in a good way – mid-tempo Italo romper that never failed to ignite the party.

Roisin Murphy & DJ Koze / You Knew (Payfone Remix)

Payfone turned in a chugging deep house reading of Rosin & Koze’s You Knew, which proved to be a perennial favourite in my sets last year.

Jazxing / Neu Nostalgia (Das Komplex Remix)

Deep, trippy, arpeggiated business from Das Komplex that always hit the spot. Could easily have been any of his spectacular remixes from last year.

Mildlife – Return To Centaurus (Lovefingers Bathhouse Odyssey)

I opened up so many ALFOS parties with this psyche-sleaze classic. Andrew Lovefingers summoning the spirit of Patrick Cowley’s porno soundtracks. Perfect early doors business.
