Jura Soundsystem was established in 2018. On a new 12 they’ve gone back over their catalogue and had a few crackers remixed. Quiet Village – Matt “Radio Slave” Edwards and Joel “Velvet Season & The Hearts Of Gold” Martin – really shook things up, were totally revolutionary, when they first appeared with their epic dubbed-out extensions / edits nearly 20 years ago. Here, they turn in a terrific take on Carafe Denim. Transforming the track, plucked from the Monster Skies mini-LP, into a seductive Sci-Fi samba. All sparse, deep space bass and starlight-like percussive patterns, with big piano chords that slowly build drama. Good Block – who I’m a huge fan of – lift Linn Fun from 2022’s Return To The Island – and fill it with bells, breakbeats, and backwards sequences. Paying homage perhaps to William Orbit’s early `90s sound, but countering this with serious digidub subs. A machined marimba adds momentum, while field recorded dialogue filters in and out. Their touchstones seem to be artists such as Colourbox and Torch Song. Possibly Biting Tongues. The folks behind the “funky alternatives” that filled dancefloors before – in the U.K. at least – Balearic Beats were a thing. The sort of records that Andrew Weatherall brought to Shoom and the Second Summer Of Love. The terribly talented Tapes – aka Jackson Bailey – tackles the System’s debut, Udaberri Blues. Cutting up and collaging congas and kick, teasing them into a stop / start carnival rhythm, and then balancing the resulting racing Nyabinghi rattle with a skanking, half-speed dub B-line. Head-nodding and hypnotic it’s the most body-moving bit of business I’ve heard him do.
