Marvellous Munich duo, Coeo, serve up a most excellent E.P. of rebooted retro house. This, their tenth team up with Toy Tonics, features a trio of new tracks and one remix. Each piece draws inspiration from a different point in Disco’s Revenge’s timeline.
The buoyant, bouncing Breeze, for example, has a `90s New York swing. Adding panpipes and Steve Hillage / System 7-like “whale song” arcs to a dangerous Matthias Heilbronn / Mike Delgado-esque dub. A bumped up re-rub of stuff like Lovebeads’ This Is The Only Way. A real vibe-a-tory thing. Meet Me At The Cascades is deliciously deep, floating faux flutes over Nightwriters’ cowbell and warm waves of emotive swells.
The appropriately titled, Nostalgia, though, is a fantastic 88 / 89 flashback. Beefed up, pitched up classic European “Paradise” house. Latin congas racing around its pace-y 4 / 4. Pretty sequences like sunlight dancing, playing on Mediterranean waves. Uplifting strings and big anthem piano raising party people’s arms to the Heavens. Its bionic brass fanfares and Spanish guitar flourishes a ringer for Raúl Orellana’s late `80s Balearic floor-fillers. Stump Valley’s remix packs an even more punchy kick, and shifts its focus almost exclusively to the keys. Drums rolling beneath the now looped rave riff. Vocal fragments, old school, sound like they’ve been scratched in. The Ukrainians securing surefire smiles by introducing a second, sublime, jazzy solo.*
*This’ll go super nicely with Ghoßt Assembly.
