Isle Of Jura’s third instalment in their Instrumental Dubs series delivers 5 diverse echo-drenched excursions. The first 2 are sought after slices of UK reggae / lovers rock, dating from 1989 and 1990. Both were originally released on Brixton-based sound system operator Howard Hill’s label, Passion Enterprises. Granti Asher & Paulette Tajah’s Love Or Physical and Michael Prophet’s Body Fusion also both share very similar Soul II Soul-esque string arrangements. The former boasts the biggest bottom end one the comp. The latter finds the legendary roots vocalist covering Starvue’s rare groove classic.
Protek’s I Love To Dance With You is plugged-in pop, again from 1990, that matches an idiosyncratic soulful vocal with rattling, bass heavy electro boogie. Suitably strange – it made me think of Gene Pitney’s Train Of Thought – it’s the sort of thing that would have been a big hit at Daniele Baldelli’s Cosmic Club… or Moonboots and Jason Boardman’s Aficionado.
The Cool Notes’ Natural Energy brings things back to Brixton. The 7-piece’s 1985 B-side has great group harmonies and hits like a funkier, less flamboyant RAH Band. Ilija Rudman’s Dub 4 Love started life as a reinterpretation of an `80s house favourite, but the “secret weapon” version here takes the track further away from its source. Machined soul, with a strong electro influence and pretty vibes – that call to mind Craig Peyton’s update of William deVaughan’s Be Thankful – it very effectively pays tribute to the vintage tunes it shares vinyl with. This authenticity no doubt due to Rudman’s incredible MCI 542 D mixing desk.
