Aus Isoda / Interwoven / WRWTFWW

Interwoven is a collaboration between 2 generations of pioneering Japanese electro-acoustic musicians. Ken-Ichiro Isoda was part of the first wave of artists producing what has come to be referred to as Kankyo Ongaku. Suites of ambient compositions, inspired by Eno, made possible by newly affordable technology, designed to transport listeners from busy city streets to more serene, mediative surroundings. A contemporary of creators such as Hiroshi Yoshimura, Isoda debuted, 1984, on the now legendary Tokyo label, Sound Process, and in `91 recorded a number of sought after releases for Apollon. Yasuhiko Fukuzono aka aus first appeared in the early 2000s, and since then he’s established his own imprint, Flau, as a champion of forward-thinking homegrown electronics.

The two have teamed up for a total of 9 tracks where Aus’ synthesised treatments synergise with Isoda’s selection of acoustic instruments. Piano, peacefully plucked harp, sit alongside assorted traditional strings, woodwinds, bells, chimes, and careful kalimba clicks. On Palinode, sax introduces a touch of jazz. Aus adding soft, sonic caresses. Reflecting, refracting tiny details in cavernous echo. Constructing complexity via the counterpoint of expertly layered repeats.

The results are soothing, relaxing, full of light and gentle positivity. Shaping an optimistic score for the start of a new day. Each element dancing, waltzing, summoning sunshine. Romantic melodic themes recurring throughout the recordings, in places recalling the work of the celebrated cinematic composers Ryuichi Sakamoto and Joe Hisaishi. Autumn Has Broken, for example, seems to initially riff on Sakamoto’s Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, before morphing into something more modular.

Aus and Ken-Ichiro Isoda’s Interwoven can be ordered directly from WRWTFWW.
