There are 5 tracks here from Canadian Serena Pasion aka Peach. Music inspired by trips to, and incorporating field recordings from, the Philippines and Vietnam, plus a “Soak” in a Tokyo sento. The latter providing the EP with its title. In line with that relaxing session in a city public bath, everything is pretty chilled.
“Bathtime Bliss” is ethereal ambient built from ripples of new age-y textures. An otherworldly synergy of gentle circuitry and computerised woodwind sighs. The soundscape painting a landscape that’s a futuristic reflection of Jon Hassell’s Fourth World.
“Batangas Beat” moves to funky, marching snares, but is full of fluid, liquid electronics. Leaving the listener free to nod their head, stomp their feet, or simply sit, hypnotised.
“Accidental Zoom” edges more toward the dance floor, its B-line descended from Bobby Konders. However, the mood is deep and muted. Dense with looped, collaged detail, sampled vocal snippets and soothed by serene synthetic swells.
The beatless “Rainy Season” is where those field recordings make themselves most felt. Twisted, transformed into a tranquil stream of trickling tones, and serenaded by programmed panpipe-like whispers.
The closing, pretty, glitchy “Christian’s Song” could pass for the intricate Icelandic electronica of early Mum.
Peach’s “Soak Vol. 1” can be ordered directly from Mood Hut.
