Toronto-based artist Bradley Sean Alexander Deschamps’ solo catalogue, as anthéne, online catalogue goes back around a decade. That of his label, Polar Seas Recordings, goes back a little further. BBTT, however, only discovered Duchamps’ work in 2023, via a collaboration with site favourite, IKSRE, titled “Shifting Seasons”. Deschamps’ latest release is a 2 track package, aimed to raise money for the Palestinian Children’s Relief Fund. Both compositions / improvisations are 12-minute plus ambient pieces, generated entirely from treated electric guitar.
“breathing sky” is a tender vibration, a hymn of a hum, rich in harmonics and tone. Flowing, unwinding and aching, a longing. Folding in field recordings. A crackling, natural static, surrounding its metallic beauty. Beaten, bruised, distorting, buckling. Marking a sense of quiet, noble mourning. A moving forward, because there is no going back.
“a flash of light” rises slowly from subliminal levels. A drone summoning a steely, silvered melancholy. A reflective stillness. Painting pictures of a ruined landscape. Remembering, cherishing what was. Its title perhaps a reference to a source of devastation. The last thing recalled before. Its edges fizzing, decaying as it threatens to fade. Creating bowed, almost orchestral arcs. Introducing ghostly glitches, like interrupted shortwave signals. A quiet buzz where a hole has been punched in humanity. Leaving a delicate whirl of dust and debris. Describing a hollow, the aftermath of a blast, where only broken hearts remain.
anthéne’s “breathing sky” can be ordered directly from Polar Seas Recordings. 100% of proceeds go to the Palestinian Children’s Relief Fund.
