Mix / Looking For The Balearic Beat / August 2017

Paraphrasing the Soul Sonic Force and sorting through today`s releases for tunes that could have graced Alfie & Leo`s Amnesia dance floor.

Three tracks from Jeremy Spellacey`s Crown Ruler Sound Compilation on Spacetalk. To be honest I could have quite easily played the whole thing. Saturday night, warming up in Tokyo, I pretty much did. An Airto cover and songs in praise of wildlife and mother continents. I`ve also included two of the five remixes of Denis Mpunga & Paul K. on Music From Memory. Androo`s 21st Century Dub and Prins Emanuel`s Proto-House Ethno-Beats. Bop & 291Out pay tribute to Italy`s musical heritage. Those pioneers of Library Music and Horror cinema. The mysterious When Doves Cry have the fretless bass led Pop of Ed Chorusno. From Cobby & Litten`s latest, Boothferry, there`s the late night tale of (Not Another) Urban Mystic. A spot-on piece of poetic observation. For anyone who`s been there. Goodness knows I have. More than worthy of John Cooper Clarke comparisons. Archeo reissue Blindboy`s I Dream. A mix of moody rock guitar, Miami Vice, and ethereal Folk harmonies that I`m sure everyone associates with Mark Seven. Manu has also enlisted Leo Mas, Fabrice & Andrea Gemolotto for that tribal rework of Enzo Avitabile`s Devozioni Dialettali. Brother Valentino starts the dance for Analog Africa. Kay Sukuzi gives the Blackbush Orchestra a space-age refix for Beauty & The Beat`s second release. Futuristic and technoid. A not too distant relative of FK`s take on Mark Barrott`s Cascades. Itself, about to finally make it to vinyl. Mr Bongo represses the brilliant Brazilian Boogie of Olivetti & Jorge. Awesome Tapes do the same for the superlative South African sing-a-long of Om Alec Khaoli. Rush Hour handling the sublime psychedelic guitar riding House of Senyaka. Bosq extends the Funk of Orchestre Poly Rythmo De Cotonou for Sol Power Sound. Loose Change take Isaac Hayes on a trip for Pleasure Unit. Rolling out those pianos before hitting him with a 303. Jex Opolis borrows something (a B-line?) from Eddy Grant`s California Style for his Caribbean Dub of Lemonade`s Dancer On The Shore. Is It Balearic? have an E.P. of equally dubbed Disco from Fernando. For me Karmic`s the standout. Slap bass, Latin percussion and Brazilian keys. Like something from People Records. Here Come One. Rio by way of Ladbroke Grove. Kuniyuki turns George Decimus` Sika into a steel pan classic on a par with Stephen Encinas` Llypso Illusion. Managing to reference Derrick May`s remix of Sueno Latino in the process. The infectious rhythm guitar and piano-tastic finale of Francisco & Cosmo`s 911 Radio recalls Amnesia favourites such as Act`s Snobbery & Decay. Pino Presti`s cover of Soul Makossa is as Balearic as Alexander Robotnick`s A Love Supreme.

*I have a fair amount of nice stuff still on its way to me in the post (Ed Motta, Krootchey….). So there may be a part 2 this month.
