Nina Walsh was responsible for two releases in 2022, that completely blew me away. First there was Music To Fall Asleep To: Delta Waves, which I purchased expecting it to be a comforting insomnia-crushing 40 minute drone. It was / is so, so much more than that. A definite journey, it’s like The Orb let loose on a classical symphony, with all manner of detail, voices, instruments, and field recordings, drifting, filtered, dubbed, in and out. Then there was Nina’s Retrospective E.P. which across four tracks, spanning twenty years, tapped into musical forces such as Big Star, Brian Eno, Johnny Marr’s jangle, and in addition paid tribute to post-punk icons Pink Industry. Darkest Night in particular is a classic, timeless, heartbroken anthem. Here, Nina looks back at the last 12 months` listening.
Super selections and wonderful words by Nina Walsh.
In 2022, I was mostly listening to…
The ever-astonishing fourth posthumous album from late sonic anarchist, Erick Legrand, dedicated to and titled in honour of those lucky enough to have called him a friend.
RICHARD NORRIS / MUSIC FOR HEALING SERIES
Soothing, swelling, often pastoral layers of beauty. As the name suggests, healing.
STINKY JIM / IT’S NOT WHAT IT SOUNDS LIKE
Straight out of New Zealand, Jim Pinkney always brings a smile to any skank.
A great discovery from French label, ODGprod, released in 2015.
YIN YIN / THE RABBIT THAT HUNTS TIGERS
Released on Les Disques Bongo Joe, this funky disco exotica classic is my regular housework soundtrack. It makes me dance, dust, and kung fu fight on occasions.
FR4NCESCO / FLORESTA ENCANTADA
When I first discovered this recording it sounded like the secret love child to my own C-pij01 recording, Day, so naturally resonated. Tribal forest ambient sounds to daydream the hours away.
LEE DORSEY / RIDE YOUR PONY & GET OUT OF MY LIFE WOMAN
Lee Dorsey is a staple in my ‘feel good’ section of the record shelves. This was my first vinyl purchase after relocating Facility 5 to Dorchester, and has been hammered ever since. Bought from the wonderful Vinyl Van independent record store in Brewery Square.
JOE GIDEON & THE SHARK / HARUM SCARUM
Still playing this to death. ‘Anything You Love That Much, You Will See Again’ is my stand out
A bit late to the game here but makes a perfect soundtrack to fireside chilling with Binky the dog.
MICHAEL CHAPMAN / SAVAGE AMUSEMENT
Never too far from the turntable, Mr. W. turned me on to this classic album. Recorded in London, Cornwall and Memphis working alongside Don Nix. A finely woven tapestry of blues, country, folk, gospel, rock and soul.
IMPERIAL WONDERS / LORD WHAT IS HAPPENING TO THIS WORLD?
The perfect theme song to 2022.
