Seahawks / Infinite Echo Remixes / Cascine

New York label, Cascine, have selected several cuts from SeahawksInfinite Echo, and sent them over to Japan to be remixed. Choosing three Japanese gentlemen, whose profiles are currently pretty high, for the task.

Taro Nohara, following a couple of great albums on Growing Bin and WRWFTWW, tackles Beams Of Love. Moving away from his Hyper Nu Age Tekno, he creates something slightly more “organic”, from shimmering organ drone and a sultry saxophone. The results suggesting Fame Studios, Muscle Shoals, the morning after, coming down. Troubles and problems having been given a talking to, and for now pushed aside. Perhaps, even, an epiphany / resolution reached. The soundtrack to the start of a new day, filtered through fresh, but tired eyes.

aus, whose sound characteristically mixes classical with ambient techno, puts his spin on Space Oracle, and has field recorded seabirds and children’s chatter synergise with serene sine waves and fluffy, floating, loops. A masterclass in minimalism, his remix comes steeped in a sense of nostalgia, the sonic equivalent of putting a seashell to your ear, as tenderly tinkling ivories dissolve into crashes of treated surf. Producing a piece part Yves Tumor’s Limerence, and part Gigi Masin’s The Word Love.

Kiyotaka Fukagawa, aka Calm, seems to be really coming into his own recently, with a series of stunning reworks, which evolve from flotation tank tranquility to full-on TB-303 catharsis. His two re-imaginings of Blue Surround continue in this winning vein. A “Mellow Mellow Acid” mix builds from gentle keys, woodwind, and a slo-mo, “lub dub” arrhythmia, to an intense live drum finale and electronics like Catherine wheel sparks. The dub reduces this to a beautiful beatless reading. A rippling river of Roland, ethereal exclamations, static and hum.

Seahawks, Jon “Ocean Moon” Tye and Pete Fowler, recently appeared on Dublab. Their show, like the above set of remixes, focused on the pair’s love and respect for Japan. Pete spent many years here, in The Land Of The Rising Sun, working as an illustrator, designing clothes and toys for his marvellous (and highly collectable) Monsterism brand.
