Berlin’s champions of the TB-303, Acid Test celebrate their 15th anniversary with a compilation of 13 tracks at, or below, 115 BPM. All, of course, employ Roland’s little silver box, but do so to varying effect. Iron Curtis presents Leaves’ “xACD” is the slowest number. Riding a pulse like a resting heartbeat. Donato Dozzy’s “Acidioma” is next. Its machines making a gnarly growling, and emitting hypnotic, fluctuating oscillations. AAA’s “Acid X Angel” hits 99, an easy ocean, a sea of serene, mutable, malleable, melodic modulation. Lerosa’s “Rasul” clocks in at 100, as does Om Unit’s “Sun In Pisces”. The former buzzes, kinda kosmische. Tabla tickling its low end. The latter is bumpier, bouncier. Its effervesce sending out strange shapes, squiggles, around soft, seductive, ethereal sighs. Tin Man’s “Flowering Acid” is slightly faster. Its sparse, seemingly spontaneous emissions set to a shuffling rhythm. Its theme, Boards Of Canada worthy.
Katatonic Silentio’s “Quicksand” rumbles around 108. Blending flotation tank bleeping with blissed out percussive ringing and rattling. Its kick muted, but, as its elements coalesce, still carrying a solid dance floor swing. John Tejada’s “Motion Study For Leaves” picks up the baton – but not the pace – taking its time to construct / cement its mid-tempo chug. Gradually fading in high hats, and bringing in 1, 2, 3 countering melodies, that tumble, trippy, gathering spiralling, fractal-like complexity. The TB-303 finally making its warped bass flex felt. Higher Intelligence Agency “Vibracosm” whizzes, whirrs, clicks, , busy IDM-like. Sonically, kinda aquatic, like scuba-diving in the tropics. Patricia’s “Rolling Boil” is house that gently bubbles, simmers. Rings with a reprised rave riff. Human harmonies adding to its depth.
SW’s “FIVteenBITween” is the first of 3 tracks that reach 115. Pairing funky flatulence with a forceful breakbeat. Swooning, romantic strings and warm Fender Rhodes-like keys eventually tempering its boisterous edge. Marco Passarani then delivers “Atlas Regio”, a minimal, but emotive “bleep & bass” soundtrack for exploring inner / outer space. TM404’s “Fenton” is a feel good epic, that mixes dub techno texture with old school Chicago squelching, in an affectionate nod to Jack Frost, Adonis, and The Second Summer Of Love.
Everything here is a standout. Everything coulda been a single. All the selections superbly showcasing the TB-303’s unique trance-inducing quality. While the compilation’s primary intention, I suspect, is to sooth open minded heads – nothing here could quite be classified as a peak time big room banger – to move one’s feet is always an option, should one feel so inclined.
“one(15)” can be ordered directly from Acid Test.
