Vanity Project / File Management Blues / Clap Trap

Following the loss of 10 years worth of studio data, Vanity Project somehow pulled himself together, move forward and produce something new. The track, in tribute titled “File Management Blues”, comes in 5 versions, on a 12, in artwork that – like New Order’s “Blue Monday” but without the die-cut expense – resembles a floppy disc.

The original mix is snare snapping, snare smashing house, with some great old school bass and drum programming, a moody synth melody and a little lysergic lick. “Part 2” gets stripped back a bit, while having more acid pumped into it. Sleazy and strobe-lit, Paranoid London-esque, classic Detroit-y orchestration moves things in a electro-y, techno-y direction. I have to admit this wasn’t what I was expecting at all after VP’s recent post-punk-y, Colourbox / Shriekback-esque remixes of Dub Specialists for Mysticisms.

90s NYC garage keys and funky organ touches add countering caresses to “Everybody Talkin’ ‘Bout (File Management Blues)” bringing a mellower vibe. Ruf Dug delivers a remix that stretches things out over a slower, looser rattle. A whooshing joining the TB-303. The downtempo “Dub”, however, is the EP at its most Balearic, where strings and rave-y riffs ride a break-derived beat.

Vanity Project’s “File Management Blues” can be ordered directly from Clap Trap.
