Mix / Chocolate Milk And Brandy February 2017

Attempting to recreate the golden yesterdays of Jose Padilla`s White Isle sunsets with the tunes of today.

The Mercy

Jóhann Jóhannsson – The Mercy – Deutsche Grammophon

Jóhann Jóhannsson`s main theme from his sadly posthumously-released score for James Marsh`s cinematic re-telling of Donald Crowhurst`s tragic attempt to single-handedly sail around the world.

Terekke - Improivastional Loops

Terekke – I8r h8r – Music From Memory

Damn elegant Ambient vapour from Matt Gardner. Best known under this alias for slightly more banging gear on L.I.E.S. Here he provides music in the timeless Dub Techno vein of Brock Van Wey`s White Clouds Drift On And On.

Ezra Feinberg

Ezra Feinberg – Kernel And Shell – Related States

This debut, solo LP from New York-based guitarist, Ezra Feinberg, was a Moonboots` tip. The “King” at Manchester label, Aficionado, comparing this track to the Penguin Cafe Orchestra. While the album as a whole incorporates Hymn-like drone, and picking as delicate and intricate as spider`s web. Blue melodies and complex counterpoint. Multilayered Post-Rock, Mark McGuire-like, mini-epics, and lazy summer`s afternoon strums, accompanied by Hawaiian pedal steel.

Matthew Halsall

Matthew Halsall – Tribute To Alice Coltrane – Gondwana Records

Another Moonboots recommendation. This one causing a stir at the recent John Stammers gig. An event which marked the start of the celebrations of “Twenty Years of Aficionado”. From the LP, When The World Was One, by Mancunian trumpeter, Matthew Halsall. The record was originally released in 2014, but conveniently just got a repress. Koto and flute give the album a touch of the Osamu Kitajimas – as well as the Alice Coltranes. Sax is provided by Nat Birchall, who’s about to issue a stellar solo set on Jazzman.

Batteaux_1024x1024

Batteaux – Living`s Worth Loving – Be With Records

Essential Blue-eyed Soul. Something that`s become a benchmark by which I measure others. Reissued by Be With.

Carlos Maria Trindade Nunco Canavarro

Carlos Maria Trindade – Guiar – Urpa I Musell

Nuno Canavarro – Antica / Burun – Urpa I Musell

Two selections from the “Fourth World Holy Grail”, Mr. Wollogallu, reissued by Discos Paradisos` Urpa I Musell. One from each of the collaborators. Mixing Finis Africae and Roberto Musci with more Penguin Cafe Orchestra vibes.

Morrison Kincannon

Morrison Kincannon – Sonshine – Spacetalk

Like Jean-Luc Ponty jamming with The Little River Band. Superlative West Coast Soft Rock rescued from the archives of Norman Morrison by Spacetalk.

Sth Notional Promo

Sth Notional – Song With No Words (Kuniyuki Remix) – Archeo Recordings

One of the cracking remixes from the forthcoming 3×12 reissue of this Japanese “Balearic” Classic.  “Discovered” by Phil Mison, who sent a copy to Moonboots, who put it on his Originals compilation for Claremont 56. Kuniyuki taking their cover of David Crosby for an extended float.

Mushi And Lakansyel

Mushi And Lakansyel – Distances – Granit

I`m still rinsing this LP of Haitian Jazz. This possibly the standout. With a nod towards Pat Metheny`s First Circle.

Durutti Column - All That Love And Maths Can Do

Durutti Column – All That Love And Maths Can Do – Tiger Bay

Originally released in 1987 on Italian label, Materiali Sonori. Now reissued by Tiger Bay, who also recently handled Wim Martens Soft Verdict mini-LP (containing versions of the classics, Close Cover and Struggle For Pleasure). Three of the four tracks on this E.P. follow a pretty standard DC formula. Of rhythms laid down by Bruce Mitchell and dominated by Vini Reilly`s genius guitar. But, on All That Love And Maths Can Do, Vini limits himself to creating a Minimalist haze of delay, for John Metcalfe`s viola to play against.

MARK_BARROTT_IFEEL070_

Mark Barrott – Home Is Where You Are – International Feel

The first release of 2018 from Mark Barrot is a limited 7. With artwork that pays tribute to Durutti Column sleeves, Factory Records, and Peter Saville. Home Is Where You Are is half surf, and gentle insect chirrups and chatter. The music outside Mark`s White Isle window? The other half, synth, soft bongos, guitar chimes and a pretty, descending one-finger piano line. The lead track, Diểm Cuối – “End Point” in Vietnamese – is, fittingly, a departure. A drone piece. More Stars Of The Lid, or A Winged Victory For The Sullen, than Cafe Del Mar / Hostel La Torre. Not that the two are mutually exclusive, of course. A tonal prayer. A wordless song of worship, and reverence. A sigh of wonder and awe. To that nature, perhaps?

Troels Hammer Gold Coast

Troels Hammer – Boys In The River – Music For Dreams

Haunting use of a boys choir – a la Les Troubadours Du Roi Baudouin meets Len Leise`s forests and landscapes. From the Gold Coast E.P. Digital only at the moment, but I think an albums worth of vinyl is coming from Music For Dreams.

Hiroshi Sato Orient

Atlas Breeze

Hiroshi Sato – Jo Do – Wewantsounds

Atlas – Mediterranean Breeze – Studio Mule

The month wouldn`t be complete without at least one highly desirable Japanese reissue. February brings you two hits of Jazz Fusion. Wewantsounds have Hiroshi Sato`s 1979 LP, Orient, licensed at last for the world. Mule Musiq`s archival offshoot, Studio Mule, have the suddenly-in-demand Breeze by Atlas from 1987.

Wrong Planet Art

Wavetest – Zappelon – Phantom Island

The one with the cool “Morse Code” guitar from Wavetest`s E.P. of Techno-Soul for Zurich`s Phantom Island.
