Three fresh originals from Florecer that sorta serve as a diary, a travelogue. A document of the duo’s globe-trotting journeys while raising their infant daughters.
“What I Knew”, recorded in Lisbon, consists of a series of promises made by the pair to their children, set to a pretty pop skank. With a little Spanish guitar, machined marimba melody, dubbed out timbales and keys like Latin horns adding up to a definite Mediterranean summer holiday lilt, it’s another piece of music that coulda been a contender for KU Club’s legendary “Look De Ibiza” video. File alongside Linda Di Franco and State Of Play.
“Sleep Training” is the result of sessions held at Quinn Lamont Luke’s El Triangulo Mazunte studio complex / healing retreat in Oaxaca, Mexico. Described in the press one-sheet as a sort of fever dream, the song’s husky, whispered vocals shuffle to a “baggy”, echoed trip hop beat, surrounded by steel pan like snatches. Recalling the soon to be reissued a.s.o., and also James K’s more accessible, less experimental, moments. Remixed by Coyote, this becomes a dubby, ethereal reverie of bass, drum circle hand percussion, music box chimes and the rattling ghost of a breakbeat.
“Running Behind”, captured at the couple’s home in Half Moon Bay, California, has angelic harmonies move to a tick tock-ing programmed novo bossa nova – a la Antena. The effect reminiscent of Laura Groves’ beautiful collaborations with Bullion – with a touch of gentle acidic gurgling. Chris Coco then closes the EP with booming, bottom heavy version.
Florecer’s “Sleep Training” can be ordered directly from DSPPR.
