Released in 1983 by Dutch label Dureco Benelux. Now reissued by French imprint Nyami Nyami. Zimba`s Baleka is another Electro-Afro hybrid that had me checking my old Afro / Cosmic play / wants lists. The original mix spins percussion backwards and forwards against an elastic bass-line. The bell-like sonorities taking Wolf Muller`s water-filled pots and pans back to the future. Everything attacked with the Punk energy of Liquid Liquid.
“Stick on skin, stick on stick, stick on metal. It`s the most elemental musical form.” – Sal Principato
There`s an accapella breakdown of stomps and chants that sounds like No Zu* covering Ozo. Sofrito`s Siwo submits a subtle extension. The Comet Is Coming add a honking horn and a buzzing bottom end worthy of Africaine 808.
